License Renewals

All even numbered licensees will renew in even numbered years. All odd numbered licensees will renew in odd numbered years.  The license renewal period is from October 1 to December 1.

There is no limit on the number of CE hours that may be taken online.

Continuing Education and CPR

Continuing Education

Under K.A.R. 71-4-1(c), all hygienists will need 30 hours of CE, including 1 hour of ethics, since December 1st of the last renewal, or 15 hours if this is the first renewal.

Random audits of continuing education courses begin in February of each year.  Unless chosen for random audit, licensees are not required to submit copies of any continuing dental education certificates or a list of continuing education courses taken. If chosen for an audit, licensees will be required to submit certificates.

Up to 4 hours in CPR training may be used toward your CE renewal requirement.

CPR Cards

Under K.A.R. 71-4-1, each licensee must obtain a current “basic cardiac life support for the health care provider” certificate.  Any of the following American Heart Association certified, American Red Cross certified, or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) courses are acceptable to fulfill this new regulatory requirement for license renewal:

  1. Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers;
  2. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) for healthcare providers; or
  3. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) for healthcare providers.

Additionally, an online course is acceptable only if there is a “hands-on” portion for the certification course.  The Board will not accept any online course that does not have a demonstrable “hands-on” portion for the certification course.  Unless chosen for a random audit, copies of cards do not need to be submitted with license renewals.  Licensees will, however, be required to submit the expiration date of the CPR card with the license renewals.  This regulatory requirement applies to all future license renewal periods.

License Cancellation

Pursuant to K.S.A. 65-1431(f)(1), "Any license granted under authority of [the Kansas Dental Practices Act] shall automatically be canceled if the holder thereof fails to apply for and obtain renewal prior to March 1 of the year following the December in which a renewal application is due."
